Praying Psalm 70 in turbulent times

During his lifetime, King David often found himself surrounded by hate and ill will. In physical, mental, and spiritual danger – as we are today – this beloved man of faith turned to God, seeking protection, deliverance, and peace.

In the midst of his own troubles, however, David prayed for others who sought God’s help. Like Christ, King David prayed for us.

Psalm 70 – prayer of David
from King James Version

Make haste, O God,
to deliver me;
make haste to help me,
O Lord.

Let them be ashamed
and confounded that
seek after my soul:
let them be turned
backward, and put
to confusion, that
desire my hurt. Let
them be turned back
for a reward of their
shame that say,
Aha, aha.

Let all those that seek thee
rejoice and be glad in thee:
and let such as love
thy salvation say continually,
Let God be magnified.

But I am poor and needy:
make haste unto me, O God:
thou art my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, make no tarrying.

Psalm 70 – prayer of David paraphrased

Deliver me, God!
Lord, hurry to help me!

Let anyone who seeks my life
be disgraced and confounded.

Let those who wish me harm
be driven away in embarrassment.

Let everyone who seeks You
rejoice and be happy in You.

Let those who love
Your deliverance
keep saying, “God is great!”

But, God, I am in distress
and in need!

You are my help.
You are my deliverer.
Oh please, Lord, do not delay.

Jacob prays for deliverance

Trickery and an aptitude for manipulating people marked Jacob’s early years, but after being treated that way for a long time by his father-in-law, this son of Isaac headed home with a new attitude.

The problem was, Jacob didn’t know what his twin brother Esau, whom he’d tricked more than once, might do! However, Jacob did know God had blessed him. Humbling himself before the Lord, he asked for protection and deliverance in this prayer.

Genesis 32:10-11 a prayer of Jacob

I am not worthy
of the least of all the mercies,
and of all the truth,
which thou hast shewed
unto thy servant;
for with my staff
I passed over this Jordan;
and now I am become two bands.

Deliver me, I pray thee,
from the hand of my brother,
from the hand of Esau:
for I fear him, lest he will come
and smite me, and the mother with the children.

Genesis 32:10-11 a paraphrased prayer of Jacob

Lord, I am not worthy
of all the loving kindness
and faithfulness
You have shown me,
for I began with nothing
and now have far more
than I could ever need.

But, Lord, I’m alarmed
by those I fear might
harm me and my family.
Please deliver us, I pray.

May God help us to let go of the past as we humble ourselves before Him and begin the New Year in prayer, praise, and appreciation.

Thank God for being with us!

Psalm 138: 1-3, 7-8

With all my heart, I give You thanks, O LORD.
Before the heavenly beings, I sing Your praise.

I bow down to You toward Your holy temple
and give thanks to You
for the love and truth in Your name –

Your name,
Your word
above all!

On the day I call,
You answer me
and increase the strength
in my soul.

Even if I find myself in the middle of trouble,
You protect me from the anger of others.

Your stretch out Your hand to me,
and the rightness of Your hand delivers me.

The Lord will fulfill
His purposes for me,
for Your steadfast love endures forever, O LORD,
and You will not let go
the work placed in Your hands.
