Praying for God to protect

King David, a strong man of God, found strength in praying for God’s protection. Many of his Bible prayers in the book of Psalms provide a pattern of praying for God to protect us in frightening times that threaten our safety.

Psalm 140:1, 7 – a prayer of David
from the King James Version

Deliver me, O Lord,
from the evil man:
preserve me
from the violent man;

O God the Lord,
the strength of my salvation,
thou hast covered my head
in the day of battle.

Psalm 140:1, 7 – a prayer of David
in everyday English

Deliver me from evil, Lord!
Protect me from violence.

O Lord, my God,
my mighty Savior,
You have covered
my head for the battle.

Praying Psalm 70 in turbulent times

During his lifetime, King David often found himself surrounded by hate and ill will. In physical, mental, and spiritual danger – as we are today – this beloved man of faith turned to God, seeking protection, deliverance, and peace.

In the midst of his own troubles, however, David prayed for others who sought God’s help. Like Christ, King David prayed for us.

Psalm 70 – prayer of David
from King James Version

Make haste, O God,
to deliver me;
make haste to help me,
O Lord.

Let them be ashamed
and confounded that
seek after my soul:
let them be turned
backward, and put
to confusion, that
desire my hurt. Let
them be turned back
for a reward of their
shame that say,
Aha, aha.

Let all those that seek thee
rejoice and be glad in thee:
and let such as love
thy salvation say continually,
Let God be magnified.

But I am poor and needy:
make haste unto me, O God:
thou art my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, make no tarrying.

Psalm 70 – prayer of David paraphrased

Deliver me, God!
Lord, hurry to help me!

Let anyone who seeks my life
be disgraced and confounded.

Let those who wish me harm
be driven away in embarrassment.

Let everyone who seeks You
rejoice and be happy in You.

Let those who love
Your deliverance
keep saying, “God is great!”

But, God, I am in distress
and in need!

You are my help.
You are my deliverer.
Oh please, Lord, do not delay.

Praying for God’s protection

In this prayer-psalm, King David asks God to protect him – not from the enemy, whoever or whatever that might be – but from fear. He also prays, in essence, to be kept untouched by the ills and ill-will around him.

Psalm 64:1-2 – a prayer of David
from the King James Version of the Bible

Hear my voice,
O God, in my prayer:
preserve my life
from fear of the enemy.

Hide me
from the secret counsel
of the wicked;
from the insurrection
of the workers of iniquity:

Psalm 64:1-2 – a prayer of David
paraphrased into contemporary English

Hear my voice, O God,
even when I complain!

Protect my life from fear
and dread of terror.

Hide me from hateful plots
and hate-filled people,
from trouble-making mobs.

Praise You, Lord God, for heeding our prayers and keeping us safely tucked into Your Holy Spirit.
